Championship Satiation – Basketball

Basketball is the second sport in this series on the most deserving teams since the playoffs have begun. If you have not read it first, here is the original post in the series which describes how I came about determining a ‘satiation’ factor for each team and each city. Since this study only goes back 30 years, there are multiple teams which have not won a championship in that span of time. So the cumulative ‘satiation’ factor for each city is factored into the one for each sports team. This takes into account if a fan may be satiated by championships in the same city by other sports.

One thing interesting to note about basketball is how much certain teams have dominated. More than any other sport. The top four teams account for 23 of the last 30 championships. And only 3 other teams won the remaining 7.

There are currently 30 professional basketball teams in the NBA. There are also four cities (Kansas City, San Diego, Seattle, and Vancouver) which have lost teams and currently do not have a team. So the top five teams which are most deserving are:
1 – Portland (0.00)(30 seasons)(no championship)
2 – Utah (0.00)(30 seasons)(no championship)
3 – Cleveland (0.01)(30 seasons)(no championship)
4 – Milwaukee (0.07)(30 seasons)(no championship)
5 – Atlanta (0.07)(30 seasons)(no championship)

The top five least deserving teams are:
30 – San Antonio (7.91)(30 seasons)(’07,’05,’03,’99)
29 – LA Lakers (6.17)(30 seasons)(’09,’02,’01,’00,’88,’87,’85,’82,’80)
28 – Boston (3.41)(30 seasons)(’08,’86,’84,’81)
27 – Chicago (2.97)(30 seasons)(’98,’97,’96,’93,’92,’91)
26 – Miami (2.55)(21 seasons)(’06)

And the rest of the teams:
6 – Orlando (0.08)(20 seasons)(no championship)
7 – Minnesota(0.14)(20 seasons)(no championship)
8 – Washington (0.15)(30 seasons)(no championship)
9 – Golden State (0.17)(30 seasons)(no championship)
10 – Phoenix (0.18)(30 seasons)(no championship)
11 – Sacramento (0.20)(24 seasons)(no championship)
12 – Charlotte (0.20)(19 seasons)(no championship)
13 – Dallas (0.33)(29 seasons)(no championship)
14 – Denver (0.34)(30 seasons)(no championship)
15 – Philadelphia (0.42)(30 seasons)(no championship)
16 – Toronto (0.44)(14 seasons)(no championship)
17 – Indiana (0.52)(30 seasons)(no championship)
18 – NY Knicks (0.56)(30 seasons)(no championship)
19 – Memphis (0.61)(8 seasons)(no championship)
20 – New Jersey (0.72)(30 seasons)(no championship)
21 – LA Clippers (0.78)(24 seasons)(no championship)
22 – Houston (1.01)(15 seasons)(’95,’94)
23 – New Orleans (1.49)(5 seasons)(no championship)
24 – Detroit (2.14)(30 seasons)(’04,’90,’89)
25 – Oklahoma City (2.50)(5 seasons)(no championship)

Despite the fact that most of the teams make it to the playoffs, here are the most deserving in order for the teams that made it to the playoffs this year: Portland, Utah, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Orlando, Phoenix, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Oklahoma City, Miami, Chicago, Boston, LA Lakers, San Antonio.
