Brace Yourselves!!!

Under Glace

The current forecast here in Montréal suggests that Sunday and Monday might be dreadfully awful. Currently we have just under three feet of snow on the ground (Update: This morning we awoke to five feet of snow on our front lawn courtesy of the city’s snow removal). Sunday’s forecast is for well above freezing temperatures (7-9C, 45-48F) along with large amounts of rain. You might think this would be a good way to reduce the amount of snow on the ground. The problem is that it will be very effective at melting the snow, but the snow and ice carried in the runoff will create little ice dams and puddles everywhere.

But it’s not over. Sunday night the temps will drop rather drastically. By morning it should be well below freezing at -7C, 19F. That should easily turn the place into a giant ice palace. Pretty to look at, but treacherous if you want to get around. Christmas may be interesting.

None of this really bothers me except for the possibility of losing power for a significant amount of time. We have electric heat like much of the province, so if it goes out, I’m not sure what we’ll do.

I’m really hoping that the forecast is incorrect.

Sincerely,

Chicken Little

  1. That’s rather lovely. 🙂

The photo, not the forecast so much…

  2. It’s not gonna be all that bad. Just salt all the walkways tomorrow evening when the rain stops.

  3. Hate to burst your bubble, but we are having the exact weather you describe here in Chicago. It’s 12 degrees F and windier and colder than Chicago has seen for some time. I hope Da Elder took refuge at Da Bears-Packers game today! (Or has he flown for warmer climes?) Bears were victorious: 34-7, in spite of the chill in the air.

Bundle up! It’s on its way! (The salt is a good idea.)

  4. Chicken Little got egg on his face. In my defense, CBC Radio was suggesting it could get pretty ugly five days ahead of time.
